Our 2021 vintage of this wine establishes itself smack in the middle of big, bold, and balanced. Eight acres of gnarly old-vine Zinfandel from our newest estate produces this testament to Napa Valley history. Impenetrable, glass coating color leads fans of Zinfandel to loads of blackberries, white pepper spice, sweet honeysuckle, crushed blue herbs and a very full, viscous, and lengthy finish. The 2015 vintage was a wonderfully long and balanced growing season, with an early budbreak at the end of February and slow ripening through August and into September. We picked our Chardonnay by hand, at dawn. The grapes were whole-cluster pressed and the juice fermented in 20% new French and American barrels, then aged 20 months in oak. The 2015 has a lightly green-tinted yellow-gold color, with white-rose floral notes. It is medium bodied, with notes of mellow tar and matchstick on the attack, then tart green apple, fresh pineapple, and a touch of buttery burnt caramel. A very pretty wine. Functioning as the second wine of the estate (meaning younger vines and blocks that didn’t make the selection for the top cuvée), the 2018 Relevant checks in as 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot that spent 22 months in barrel. Beautifully pure cassis, violets, flowery incense, and spice notes all emerge from this beauty, which is soft, supple, layered, and just impossible to resist. It’s an opulent, sexy wine that certainly doesn’t taste like a second wine at this point.
