Tyler Winery 2016 La Rinconada Vineyard Chardonnay

    Santa Rita Hills California
    Wine Advocate 93 Rating
The 2016 Chardonnay La Rinconada Vineyard is one of the more giving and expressive whites in Justin Willett's range this year, offering up aromas of green mango, orchard fruit and hazelnut cream. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, mouthwatering and flavorful, with a bright, chalky finish. I'd expect more texture to appear with a year or two in bottle.

  • Verite 2012 La Joie

    Verite 2004 La Muse

    North Coast California
    Wine Advocate 98 Rating
The 2004 La Muse, a blend of 88% Merlot / 8% Cabernet Franc / 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, is equal parts Alexander Mountain, Knight’s Valley and Bennett Valley fruit with a tiny bit from Dry Creek. The wine grew incrementally as it sat in the glass. A dense purple color was followed by aromas of loamy soil, charcoal, asphalt, chocolate, freshly brewed espresso and abundant blackberry and cassis fruit. This deep, rich beauty is still young and primary, but is loaded with potential. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035. SG-1

  • Verite 2012 La Joie

    Verite 2005 La Joie

    North Coast California
    Wine Advocate 100 Rating
The myth perpetrated by Old World wine proponents is that California wines don’t age. Those critics need to taste Verité, because these wines are aging far slower than I imagined. The 2005 La Joie (67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec) tips the scales at 14.7% alcohol. It received the same 18 months in 100% new oak. It is interesting that Pierre Seillan said that he thought the high-elevation vineyards of Sonoma that go into Verité (self-serving, os course) are his greatest sites in the world for Bordeaux varietals. But remember – he’s from Bordeaux! This multidimensional wine, which enjoyed a 4-5 day cool, pre-fermentation maceration, has a provocative bouquet of blackberry, cassis, new saddle leather, Christmas fruitcake, graphite and high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco. It is profound, extremely full-bodied and massive in the mouth, but not heavy or astringent in any way. This is perfection in a glass, and a tribute to what Sonoma can achieve. Give this wine another 4-5 years, and drink it over the following 30+ years. SG-1

The young and fruit-driven 2015 Flor de Vetus is pure Tinta de Toro from a warm and early harvest matured in 50/50 French and American oak barrels for nine months. It has a commercial, approachable profile, with notes of plums and sweet spices, and a juicy palate with good freshness. It calls for food. WBC

  • Grande Dame

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin 2006 La Grande Dame Brut

    Champagne France
    Wine Advocate 94 Rating
The prestigious 2006 La Grande Dame is made from 47% Chardonnay and 53% Pinot Noir, and assembles the fruit of eight grand cru villages. Very intense and complex on the nose, this is a full-bodied, round, rich and mouth-filling, but also refined prestige cuvée; it reveals a fascinating purity, precision and freshness. The finish is long and complex, and shows a spicy minerality. There are coffee beans, bread and toast aromas in the aftertaste. This comes highly recommended.
