  • Hess 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt Veeder

    $89.99

    Napa Valley California
The 2019 estate-grown Cabernet provides an exemplary expression of the sophistication, complexity, and structure that we’ve come to expect from their mountain fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon produces aromas of ripe, wild, mountain raspberry, along with gentle notes of vanilla caramel. The subtle touch of Malbec adds a soft, mouth-filling texture on the palate. Enticing flavors of dark plum, licorice, cocoa and vanilla oak spice unite to create a supple wine that lingers for a pleasing finish. SP31-1

A wonderfully layered, suave and creamy red that’s so easy to sip and enjoy now. This is largely due to the 60% malbec grapes in this blend, that when blended with zinfandel give a smoothness in texture, a deep color and what winemaker Stephanie Pope calls a blueberry pie effect. Full-bodied, rich in fine-grained tannins and broad in a chocolaty, slightly jammy way. Drink now.

A great balance between vivid fruit flavors, savory accents and mouthwatering acidity make this wine attractive to almost any wine drinker and set it up for infinite food pairings. Light tannins support red cherries, black tea and cranberry notes. Delicious now, the wine has the structure for aging, too. Best from 2026.

February saw abundant rains, followed by lots of filtered light in spring and early summer. Both bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and cooler marine influences, virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for the fruit to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels. 31% Cabernet Franc 22% Petit Verdot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec and 8% Merlot withb27 Months French Oak.

There are two Grenache cuvées under the Horsepower label, both single vineyards. Starting with the 2018 Grenache Sur Echalas Vineyard, it has a deeper ruby/plum color as well as a spectacular nose of ripe cherry and strawberry fruits intermixed with lots of white pepper, dried flowers, orange blossom, and sandalwood. With medium to full-bodied richness, firm tannins, and beautiful depth of fruit on the palate, it might be the closest thing to Rayas that I've tasted, from anywhere. It remains to be seen if this can evolve into the same category at maturity, but no kidding around, this is a beautiful, elegant, seamless Grenache. It needs 3-4 years, if not longer, to let some tannins melt away, and it should have a solid 20 years of longevity. This is 100% Grenache bottled at 13.8% alcohol. R13-2 SP19-1

This Tribe called best Syrah is positively hunger-inducing. The wine’s medium-rare steak with herb butter aroma is joined by notes of blackberry compote and fresh-mowed hay. Pie cherry, smoky lapsang souchang tea and bacon fat flavors continue the theme. Surprisingly electric acidity is the equal of all that fruit, along with fine-grained tannins. SP24-2

  • Hourglass 2019 Blue Line Estate Merlot

    $89.99

    Napa Valley California
    Jeb Dunnuck 94 Rating
The 2019 Blueline Merlot checks in as 82% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Aged 18 months in French oak, it's a ripe, sexy, beautifully textured Merlot revealing plenty of red and blue fruits as well as notes of tobacco and sappy flowers. It's ripe but also balanced, and it’s already drinking brilliantly. SP17-2
