Héritage du Pic Saint Loup Tour de Pierres is a red wine from the Pic-Saint-Loup appellation in Languedoc, made primarily from 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Mourvèdre. The Ravaille brothers cultivate their vineyards biodynamically on diverse terroir including clay-limestone soils, red clay, gravel, and pebbles at the foot of the limestone Pic Saint-Loup mountain. Traditional winemaking includes hand-harvesting and aging in large foudres. This cuvée represents a “tour of their stones,” capturing all soil types across their thousand-year-old family property. The single vineyard bottling of Franclieu from Jean Manciat is his finest terroir, with these thirty to thirty-five year-old vines planted on argilo-calcaire soils. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and raised in stainless steel tanks until bottling. The 2023 Franclieu is a touch lower in octane than the regular Mâcon-Charnay bottling in this vintage, coming in at 13.5 percent alcohol. It delivers a beautifully precise and more soil-defined bouquet of apple, pear, almond, chalky soil tones and a lovely floral topnote redolent of both white lilies and apple blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, zesty and complex, with a beautiful core of pure fruit, excellent mineral drive and grip, a lovely spine of acidity and a long, pure and impeccably balanced finish. This is outstanding Mâcon and more refined and soil-driven in personality than the regular bottling! 2025-2040.

A tasting of the various constituent lieux-dits revealed that the Bachesson parcel had a peppery side and its characteristic rose scent, and an unmistakably granitic texture. The Chalaix lieu-dit was precise, fine, with no huge concentration but good balance. Lieu-dit Dardouille was looking promising, with good weight and length. The finished blend of the domaine’s St-Joseph is likely to be neat, precise and fresh, with a distinct mineral side, one to drink relatively young.
